10 Things to know about surveillance
10 things to know about surveillance
September 23, 2010
Ten things to know about hiring a private investigator to do surveillance.
1. Conducting a surveillance operation can be expensive.
Every case is different and depends on the amount of initial information the client has, the more information provided in the initial consultation will in turn help provide a clear picture of the routines and habits of the subject. This will result in a higher probability of obtaining footage of the subject. A realistic estimate of your budget is helpful in determining the amount of hours, investigators, and services you can afford.
2. Hiring a private investigator does not guarantee results. We are fact finders, we can not guarantee the subject will do something during the time we are watching, it may take multiple attempts before activity is observed and documented. There are times when suspicions are unwarranted.
3. We cannot break the law.
We do not enter private property without permission; we do not film through windows. We must obey the traffic laws and sometimes this means losing the subject.
4. Surveillance is delicate work, even season investigators have times when due to traffic, speed, suspicion that the session has to be terminated.
5. Some times it's essential to have two investigators working surveillance. For example, in a high traffic area where a team would be more successful at maintaining constant contact with the subject or in instances where the subject may be already overly suspicious. Telling a private investigator it should not take long is like fingernails on the chalk board. Surveillance is delicate and detailed it takes time to run an investigation, establish the subjects routine, and habits. In some cases the subject's patterns of typical behavior may change when trying to cover inappropriate conduct.
6. Surveillance is usually documented through the use of video cameras, covert (hidden cameras), and still photography. Investigators use video cameras, hidden cameras, night vision aids, binoculars, and many other tools of the trade that are costly and accurate.
7. You should not attempt to follow the subject on your own.
A third party is useful, they do not have the emotional attachment that you do and can remain focused and un biased. Investigators are licensed and insured professionals they are not emotionally involved. Do not show up during the surveillance operation the subject may be alerted and the investigator may be compromised. Documentation is evidence that can be used in court proceedings.
8. Surveillance is usually billed per hour, per mile, sales tax, and excess expenses similar to those in the legal profession. Most investigators require written agreements and retainers before services can begin.
9. In most states, Private investigators are licensed or must obtain some type of business permit to operate an investigations agency. This requires liability insurance, licensing fees, and operating costs.
10. Surveillance can be tricky, long, and exhausting calling the investigator multiple times during the observation period might result in something missed or not documented. The investigator must stay focused and alert. If you have valuable information do call, but keep your call short and to the point. In the end the investigator will be able to provide you a quality work product.
