Can anyone tell me how to tell a good quality pair of binoculars!!?
Hi i have a pair of binoculars - sakura 10-90x80. They are quite heavy and bulky so i was looking to buy a compact pair. Can anyone tell me are the ones i have good quality? If so shall i buy a compact pair with those numbers on it. Or can anyone recommend a nice light powerful pair to me.for mainly bird watching/long distance............Thank you.....
Yes I can.
First stay out of the plastic clam shell area at the store.
Second DO go to the counter and see what they have that you can look at.
3ed, take the ones you can hold and hold them out at arms length so that the eye part is facing you. Look at the size and shape of the light hole. The rounder and larger the better. IF they look square put them back and look at others till you see ROUND. The larger the better.
Then, put them to your eyes and use them after setting the focus for both eyes for 3 to 5 min.. Yes a long time.
Now lets talk about what the numbers on the binos are all about.
The power. 7 8 10 etc. this tells me how much larger the image will be V my eyes with out the binos.
Now lets look at the second number. 30, 35, 38, 40, 50 etc.
This is the size of the front lens.
Now if all was easy it would be easy at this point.
50 devided by 7 gives you a 7
35 devided by 7 gives you a 5
SO the larger number gives you more light at your eye..
IF every thing else is the same.
Now re look at the binos at arms length and you will see the larger brighter hole . That is good.
SO, now if you are looking at the same make and type of bino you have a clue as to what amount of light will get to your eye.
Now it is all up to you and what you want to carry. I own 4 pair from very small belt pouch 8 x 30 nikon to 7 x 50 water proof and 10 x 50 pro prizm that I use only on a tripod looking at stars and wild life.
Now last advice. Walmart has Lupold binos for under $200.00 that are very good for the money. The 10 power Nikon they have are also very good for the price.
Hope that helps.
