astronomy binoculars.?
hi everyone, i have just discovered a wicked prog called 'stellarium' and it has re-sparked my interest in astronomy. i cant afford a telescope yet because i am a student with no money, but i do own a pair of binoculars - praktica sport 12x50 wide angle 6 degrees. am i able to spot planets such as saturn and venus with these? ( its a cloudy night so i cant test atm) and how would orions nebula look? how much will i need to spend on a reasonably decent telescope?
beginner astronomer!
thanks for any replies
tom
Saturn and Venus are both visible with the naked eye, so are easily visible in 12x50 binoculars. With your binoculars you should soon be able to see the phase of Venus (it's moving closer at the moment) and Saturn's brightest moon Titan. You won't be able to see Saturn's rings, as they require about 25x when well placed, and they are not well placed at the moment. Remember that Galileo's telescopes weren't much more powerful than your binoculars. He had a little more magnification (around 20x) but less aperture and lots more chromatic aberration. The Orion Nebula will look very nice in your binoculars, especially in a dark sky.
Here are a few web pages with good information on beginner's telescopes:

For more advanced information, read Phil Harrington's Star Ware, 4th edition (Wiley).
You'll get the greatest value for your money with a Newtonian reflector on a Dobsonian mount, such as these:

Buy from a store which specializes in telescopes and astronomy, either locally or online; don't buy from department stores, discount stores or eBay as mostly what they sell is junk. Find your local astronomy club and try out different telescopes at one of their star parties:
