Patapon 3 coming to PSP throughout the 12th April 2011 and I've played the hell out of it for the last few days. I'm kind of a Patapon nut, so my plan was to turn my life over to rhythm-based RPG and tear through it for an exclusive investigation, but I could not. The game is huge, and I need people to help me with multiplayer.
I can not review the game yet, but instead leaves you with some impressions of Patapon 3 from now until possibly after the launch day, I've started this 3 Patapon Review in Progress. If you've never seen one of those IGN functions, it boils down to the reviewer to give you daily updates on what's happening in the game and how it plays. APIRL 8th: PLANNING and multiplayer
Patapon 3 is about planning. As one who sunk more than 60 hours in Patapon 2, I know.You have to watch monsters fight and plan at least one song before (If the kite drops his head, he will ram you play retreat song) and if you're looking for rare items, you have to plan on checking for the rare quests that pop up every so often.
But the new wrinkle in planning Patapon 3 is multiplayer. Online suite of options is one of the main reasons you do not have a full review of this game. There is so much to do, I really want to kick the tires with some other players across the Internet.
Planning for this started the other day when I put a call on the inaugural members of the IGN Patapon 3 clan. I had codes from Sony, and I was willing to give them to people who could play with me all weekend long.
The response was overwhelming. More than 900 players sent emails asking to be a part of my review. (I'm sure a free copy of the game helped.) I turned down the masses and took my binoculars, got them the codes yesterday and now I'm looking to kick off the Pata-party on Saturday 9 April. However organize a strain in different time zones or countries is not easy. I think I have a doable schedule, but I'm pushing to get everyone's Skype name, so we can chat and jump into the game all weekend. Even on off hours.
I'm excited. Being able to play a franchise I really dig online with players who are equally into it is a great idea. Still, I'm hesitant. Right now - be one that has never been able to play online - multiplayer option looks a bit convoluted. There is a "multiplayer" then a "coop" and they both sound like they are story-based, but the mere mention of quests - I do not know. I'm sure when I have someone else on my team Totem, where you gather with other players, it would make sense, but right now it is not.
Patapon 3 is the latest game in Sony's and Pyramid's rhythm-based franchise. There is this tribe of one-eyed (adorable) fighters, which you must lead in battle over drum beats.The drums are the four face buttons of the PSP and songs for marching, attacking and so on are on the screen during the action. Hit the drum in the right rhythm, and the warriors make your bid.
It may sound like a casual, PaRappa the Rapper-like experience, but do not be fooled.Patapon 3 is a lengthy RPG. You are leveling these characters up, playing the same missions again and again for better things, and deal with character classes and evolutionary trees. It's a blast so far, but not go in expecting a Cakewalk with cute characters and catchy beats.
If you are a member of Patapon faithful, everything sounds exactly like the other two games in this series, but Patapon 3 actually makes a lot of useful changes. For starters, you are no longer an omniscient god. In previous games, you were just guiding troops who adored you but now your essence has been pushed into a Uberhero - a masked Patapon with lots of skills and hit points. You are Uberhero and when you play multiplayer, you will join three other Uberheroes for battle.
Up next on the improvement list is the fact that everything can be upgraded and the system makes sense. Back in the day, get branch you needed to make a stew meant you had to play a trumpet in front of a tree, and hope he dropped it. These types of mini-games are gone. Here you can collect loot in the game and break it down for commodities. You can even sell your items for ka-ching, and use the money to buy certain things at Meden store. As a longtime fan, these additions awesome.
In the last two games, walking through the same levels hoping to get a particular point sucked. In Patapon 3, you can target what you need and go get it. Brilliant.
Getting the right items are a big deal, as these commodities are used to level up weapons and armor in a blacksmith shop, but the cooler smoothing comes down to your tribe members. As you play, you earn experience points and level up your characters.As you hit milestones that unlock the ability to switch class. Maybe you want more range as an archer or the ability to use a tuba to fire a crazy attack - you can do that when you plan archer class up.
Of course, you then have to start to play, as these new classes, because they have individual level and beats them frees up more classes. There are also skills that you unlock by trying these classes (fire more arrows, a better club attack, etc.) that will make your team so much harder.
All this was incredibly geeky and detailed. The short version is that there is a ton to do and a ton to customize the Patapon third You can tailor your team for all uses ice shields or a melee powerhouse squad, and I love it so far.
It's probably not hard to believe if you know me. When I reviewed Patapon 2, I stated it was the best PSP game so far. Still, even I was not super-psyched for Patapon third If it would have been more of the same, would the hours I sink into it now, have been tortured. But they are not. I actually want to play it - right now. Partly because of the rare visits that pops up and addictive gameplay, but overall, the game feels fresh again.
But once I got started, I really did forget how Patapon game. Before my first handful of hours - about 15 missions - I slammed into a wall Progress. It was a mission I just was not strong enough to take on, and I found my tribe will be decimated. Grumpily, I jumped out and went to the old level grinding and trying to get stronger.
That's what Patapon is - it is a deep RPG that is adorable, but requires that you play through levels again and again to find treasure chests and get experience points. When I just could not continue the story, I was annoyed, but when I remembered that's how the game plays and could see my troops are getting better and better, I was hooked. Plus, humorous cutscenes not hurt either.
There is a lot left to talk about, but I think I'll end this post here. Patapon 3 is similar to the last two games at first glance but there is a lot under the hood that alter experience. The villains, history, experience points - the game feels familiar while being different.
Oh, and the biggest addition of all? There is finally a song to break the game.
