That said, there are some stats which will be more positive for spread bettors looking to side with Paul Nicholls' runner. Since 2001 only one horse has won this race carrying less than 10st10lb, Celestial Gold in 2004 off 10st5lb. As Denman is running off a mark of 182, only six of his rivals are in the handicap proper and no other horse will carry more than 10st 8lb. That means if the trend is to continue Denman is the only horse that can win it and it will take a brave punter to be against him on the spreads.
Madison Du Berlais was a shock winner of this race two years ago at 25/1, but that was the biggest priced victor in the past decade. SP spread sellers will take more encouragement from five of the past seven winners being priced between 9/4 and 13/2. Second season chasers have tended to do well in this race and Weird Al, Diamond Harry and Burton Port all look like going off towards the top of the Sporting Index win index. Spread followers of them, along with Noel Meade's Pandorama, will be pleased to hear that nine of the last eleven winners have been six or seven-year-olds. The latter is unbeaten over fences, but Arkle was the last Irish-trained winner – although Be My Royal finished first for Willie Mullins in 2002 only to be disqualified after testing positive for a banned substance.
The winning distance spread will be interesting and much will depend on the ground on the day. Denman romped home eleven lengths clear in 2007, but his winning margin was only 3 ½ lengths over What A Friend 12 months ago. The biggest winning distance in recent memory, though, was another Nicholls runner, Strong Flow, who routed his opponents by 14 lengths in 2003.
Newcastle hopes to stage its Fighting Fifth meeting on Saturday, although the weather forecast suggests they may struggle with the prospect of some heavy frosts. Reigning Champion Hurdle hero Binocular is set to reappear, but he was a well-beaten odds-on favourite in this race last year and Peddlers Cross and Starluck are no mugs. However, SP spread sellers and followers of Binocular will be delighted that seven of the last ten favourites have won this race. However, Go Native 12 months ago and The French Furze in 2003 both won at 25/1, so it's not all doom and gloom for SP buyers on the spreads.
