Iolite Is One Of The Best Gems Which Reflects Very Good Violet Light
Recently we have seen some very small pieces of iolite in the market; it was something which does not happen often. This is because of the fact that it is really very difficult to find such pieces of iolite with such a good clarity. The good quality or the very high quality iolite is really a very precious stone and it shines very brightly when cut properly. This stone is less known because of the fact that it is not present in large percentage on earth and also it is soft so people used to avoid this whenever they used to go to buy jewelry. This gem has number of varieties like apatite, fluorite, biopsied and sphene. Basically iolite is a very hard stone having rating of seven to seven ad half on the Mohs scale. This makes it as hard as tanzanite and harder than the tourmaline, peridot and each and every variety of the quartz. The reason why iolite is not well known is that it is difficult to find and it is really very expensive too. If iolite had been present in larger sizes like that or quartz and as tanzanite then it would have taken up the jewelry market.
The fine or good quality iolite is violet in color and has little unusual properties. These properties are pleochroic properties, which mean that the stone will show the glares of different colors when seen with the different angles.
Iolite will show or reflect little yellow gray and little light blue along with the dominant shade of violet or light blue color. The gem cutters really have to show great skill while cutting this gem because they have to maintain its violet or little blue glare which is visible when it is viewed from the top. The pleochroic properties of the iolite were very much known to the mariners who found its practical applications for themselves. The Vikings actually used the iolite as a polarizing lens. By using it they used to look into the haze in order to find out the actual position of the sun which used help them to navigate into sea without any problem.
So since ages this magical gem has helped people in order to do their work. It was also used in binoculars in the eighteenth century which were used by the sailors for the perfect navigation.
