Are there good and affordable telescopes for children?
My 5-year-old son is interested in Moon watching. I thought of buying him a telescope. I remember having one myself when I was a child. It was not excellent (was not professional) but I could see the Moon very well (at least the shades); I also used the telescope instead of the binoculars.
Now I have checked the amazon.co.uk for the telescopes and they are very expensive. Luger NL 25x30 Telescope for £30.00 sounds as a good quality telescope although heavy for the child. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Luger-NL-25x30-Telescope/dp/B000NVWD4M/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1287568033&sr=8-12
I think we would consider buying it in the future but I would love to know whether there is anything cheaper and still as good. I know that good binoculars can also be used for watching the Moon.
Many thanks!
Well, ..., If all you want to spend is £30.00 then by him a decent pair of 10X50 or 12X50 binoculars (Like Bushnell Powerview binoculars) and not a telescope. If you want to buy a decent telescope that won't fall apart and will have some decent quality in the optics then, I suggest a good Dobsonian scope with a 6" mirror. The skyliner 6" dobsonian scope goes for £199 (see first link below). Also connecting with your local astronomy club would be a way that you could look at various scopes before buying and to connect your son with a group of people that can help him learn astronomy. Finally, I included a video with some buying tips in the last link below.
If your son is really interested then please invest in his future. I was fortunate enough to have parents to do so when at the age of 5 I expressed an interest in astronomy and it has made a huge difference in my life.
