10x42 Binoculars
10x42 binoculars are perceived by a large number of folks to be of too high a magnification to be used in the hands effortlessly. I can not agree with them. I bought a set of Leica 10x42 binoculars roughly seventeen or eighteen years ago. I truthfully consider that I have received real value even though these items happened to be just about the highest cost of all the ones available at that time. Quite a number of people would comment that these binoculars are not comfortable to operate because of their weight. I disagree once more as I myself have certainly not had any fears because of their heavyness either dangling around my neck or when keeping them up to my eyes with my hands. I will even go so far as to state that they are tremendously "hand friendly" because of the way they are fashioned and this more than makes up for any alleged weight problem.
Why should one wish to use 10x42 binoculars? My own thought is that the magnification is right at the upper end of what it is fairly easily controllable in our hands. By this I am saying that if you go farther up in magnification, the binoculars will very often wobble a little when held in the hands. Lots of people may say that seven by magnification could well be the most suitable all round for binoculars however I judge my optics let me to watch things for a greater distance, that are also smaller. 10x42's should also let enough light to get to the eyes in between sunrise and dusk so that a nice view will constantly be obtainable. Undoubtedly 7x50's at all times let more light to get to the eyes but I as a rule do not attempt to watch birds after the sun goes down.
I hope by this time I should have convinced you that 10x42 binoculars will suit your distance viewing needs. I have to warn you that there may be a drawback that is a little difficult to surmount. In my experience we constantly get what we pay for. I told you before that my leica binoculars were enormously high-priced. If buying a similar pair these days, one would have to fork out along the lines of $2,000 (£1,250) for a pair of the same high quality as the ones I purchased. Having said that, the manufacturing quality is so great that I am sure mine will last the remainder of my lifetime. I express that with unruffled assurance because those leicas are shock resistant as well as being rainproof. I say this because over the previous seventeen or eighteen years I have dropped them a couple of times and used them out in pouring rain on a number of occasions also.
Very nearly as soon as I had purchased the Leicas, a pal at work wanted to comprehendwhy anybody would pay out that amount of money for a pair of binoculars. He had spent approximately a quarter of the amount those Leicas cost and thought that he had paid a big enough pile. He asked if I would be willing to take them to work so that he could have a glimpse at them. The moment I showed those binoculars to him, he commented "I can see where the money's gone, the colour definition and clarity of view are superb!"
It is my steadfast feeling that 10x42 binoculars need to be viewed as extremely good all round binoculars for using throughout the hours of daylight. I am likely to also constantly tell anyone who will listen to purchase binoculars that have superior quality optics, even if they have to put off purchasing them until they have saved up adequate funds. There is no doubt in my mind, that it will always be worth saving for as long as it takes to obtain those top quality 10x42 binoculars.
