Dunguib tried to get favourite backers off to a flyer last year, but his inexperienced jockey had to ride out in the car park to give his mount a clear sight of his hurdles and ended up finishing third. It's been a poor race for favourites in recent years, Brave Inca being the last jolly to win in 2004, and spread bettors looking to get with Cue Card will be hoping that he can arrest that statistic.
Unquestionably the race of the opening day, and probably the whole meeting, is the Champion Hurdle in what is quite simply a mouthwatering contest for anyone who likes a horseracing spread bet. Binocular, Menorah, Hurricane Fly and Peddlers Cross could all be short-priced favourites in a normal year, but then you have to throw the likes of Oscar Whisky, Mille Chief, Dunguib and Khyber Kim into the mix. Spread betting punters who like to buy Sporting Index's meeting SP market have enjoyed the Champion Hurdle in recent festivals with the last four winners all priced 9/1 or bigger.
Winning form at Cheltenham is normally fairly important in this race, with 16 of the last 22 winners having previously won at Prestbury Park. However, horse racing spread betting punteres will point out that Binocular won 12 months ago having never previously won at the home of National Hunt racing. A slight worry for spread followers of Menorah – who last raced in December – is that all of the last 13 winners of this contest had raced during the previous two months.
Following a run of three straight winning favourites, Weapon's Amnesty caused a minor shock in the RSA Chase at 10/1 last season, giving Ireland back-to-back victories. Time For Rupert is the horse that meeting SP sellers on the spreads will want to win, but, similarly to Menorah, he hasn't raced since December and the last 13 winners of this race had won in the previous two months. The RSA normally goes to seven-year-olds with nine of the last 11 winners coming from that age bracket. There haven't been many tight finishes to this race in recent times and the average winning margin for the past five years is almost nine lengths, which will please those buying distances with Sporting Index.
The Queen Mother Champion Chase is the highlight of Day Two and the winners of the last three races (Big Zeb and Master Minded) both line up at the head of the market. Master Minded is bidding to become only the second to horse to win the Champion Chase three times and his supporters on the spreads will be encouraged that he's won all three starts this season since a wind operation. He was a beaten favourite last year, but eight of the last 10 winners were sent off 5/1 or shorter, so SP spread sellers will be hoping to see a repeat of that trend. Big Zeb is bidding to become only the second horse aged 10 or older to win the race since 1999.
