Hiking In The Berkshires
recently coming back from a camping trip in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, I am sore and weathered from the many hiking, climbing, and swimming trips that my pals and I went on. These mountains have, without a doubt, some of the most beautiful natural features I have laid eyes on. I can see why everybody on the journey was always wanting to explore our next journey. From the tops of the mountains, to the wilderness trails, to the lakes and rivers, there is relaxation and fun to be uncovered around every bend.
The first area that we traveled to was an area named Tannery Falls, where there were hiking paths along a couple scenic streams and waterfalls. When we got to the first and biggest waterfall, my friends and I stopped for a short break by wading waist deep in the chilly pool of water below the falls. Not five minutes went by before my friends and I were all climbing up the waterfall, stopping in the small grottos on the way up to the pool at the top, known as “The Oasis.” Once we reached the the top of the waterfall, we spent most of the day there eating, swimming, tossing pebbles into the water at the bottom and occasionally striking a pose for photos taken by tourists passing by.
Our second journey was a lake kind of in close proximity to our campsite in Savoy. It was certainly not the biggest lake that I have laid eyes on, but it was so relaxed and warming that I had to swim more. Toward the center of the lake, there is a rock shaped like a seat that comes out of the water about a foot. As my friends and I uncovered, fits four with ease. This rock is where we took in the dusk of camping day number two, and believe me, it was one to remember.
Our third and last adventure destination was an area called the Windsor Jambs. The Windsor Jambs can be defined as a lengthy stretch of stream, bordered by cliffs and massive boulders that are perfect for climbing. We walked the hiking trail down to the bottom of the Jambs and got pumped up for our journey back up over the boulders and waterfalls. On many occasions I had to consult my Nikon 8x40 binoculars to see which obstacles lay ahead, and correctly plan a way to safely climb them. As well as being insanely fun, the Jambs are somewhat dangerous, but extremely stunning.
After the three day camping trip crammed with long days and wacky nights, I can definitely state that I want to go back again. I highly recommend you to see the Berkshire mountains in Mass the first chance you have. Bring your family for a camping trip, or just take a couple days for you to just relax and enjoy the outdoors. Whatever excursions or relaxations you choose to participate in, I guarantee you will be stricken by the beauty and freedom of these mountains.
