Autogenic conditioning was created by a German psychiatrist Johannes Schultz. Autogenic conditioning was used in the past by German athletic trainers to improve the athletic performance in their athletes. What the trainers observed, an impressive increase in athletic ability and skill in their athletes who consistently did relaxed visualization techniques. This caused the trainers to incorporate autogenic conditioning into their training regimes. This translated into German athletes doing extremely well during the Olympic games of the 1940's and the 1950's
When athletes use autogenic conditioning they are able to bring their level of performance up to a new level through developing an understanding of how training affects their body physiologically, and by seeing their equipment (e.g. skis, balls, rackets, javelins,) as an extension of their person. So if an athlete applies autogenic conditioning while wearing their equipment, say their tennis racket, they can significantly improve their performance level.
Autogenic conditioning focuses particularly on relaxing the athletes' muscles. It works through mental feelings of warmth and perceived heaviness instead of creating tension. This technique works very effectively for athletes who are unable to deal with acute muscle contractions and tension. For an athlete to begin this technique they will do best if they begin in a quiet room. They would begin by breathing slowly but evenly and focus their minds on getting to a high state of relaxation and warmth and focusing it on different parts of their bodies. If used consistently over time, the athlete will be able to do this fast and regain control before tension sets in.
The basic idea of the autogenic conditioning is for the body to be at the mercy of the minds directions. This technique will give the athlete the ability to become totally relaxed any time they want. It is widely accepted that autogenic conditioning will have a lot more benefits than just relaxation. Athletes also learn how to influence their organs and the organic system, so they have the ability to calm down a racing heart and a nervous stomach. The circulatory system can even be influenced to stop blushing from occurring.
There has been some debate as whether autogenic conditioning does actually produce results. There is a lot of evidence however that seems to support its beneficial effects. There is a lot of research that support the view that relaxation and tension release can have some positive physical effects. It is also thought that the placebo effect may be in play and is having some effects on the results. When people strongly believe in a particular type of relief to a situation, they tend to get better quickly. Hence positive suggestion may also have an influence on the overall results.
When athletes are using autogenic conditioning, they are advised that a qualified instructor should guide the training. It is believed that these techniques could be dangerous if not properly administered. Autogenic conditioning is not a cure for all ailments and other problems.
