Binoculars are one of the most essential tools in hunting. This small instrument can give your power of sight a boost that is needed when hunting. There are different types of binoculars and finding the right one that would suit your need is just as important as having the tool with you. It is also important that you understand how it works. Thus, understanding magnification is needed. So, here are the essential things you have to know about binocular magnifications.
Main Types Of Binoculars
In general, there are two main binocular types namely: Roof Prism Binocular and Porro Prism Binocular. These look slightly different from each other and are classified by the type of prism, which they use.
The Porro Type is the most common of the two. It consists of 2 lenses in front and prisms which bend the light reflecting it to the eyepieces at the back. This kind of binocular is considered to be the better one to be used for astronomy.
On the other hand, the Roof Prism Type is generally more expensive. It is also rarer compared to the other. It looks quite like 2 telescopes which are mounted and placed next to each other. In reality, that is what it is but with a corrective prism system so that the image could be corrected.
All About Magnification
If you would observe, when you buy a binocular, you would have to choose depending on its main type and the magnification it has. Hence, 2nd important characteristic of a binocular would be its magnification. These usually have a magnification range of 6x-20x magnification. However, most of the hand held types have a magnification of 10x and below.
Just like telescopes, magnification would determine how much close the subject you are viewing would appear. Additionally, similar to telescopes, having high magnifications could be usually problematic. Those that have a rating of 10x and more are considered to be High magnification binoculars. These High types would need to be mounted for them to be useful and less problematic.
Magnification would also determine the field of view. Although it's not that obvious, one of the main reasons that people buy binoculars is because they want to have a good wide view of the scene they're looking at. In general, lower magnification binoculars would tend to give you wider views. Hence, they present more space.
However, there's a catch. Getting the magnification rating that would be best for you is actually determined by the place you are living in or the place you are hunting in. There's a general rule in which if a place has a dark sky then low ratings would be needed and the darker it gets the lower should the magnification ratings should your eyes require.
For suburban and urban places, it's generally recommended that you get one that has a rating of 8x-12x range and - 10x being the optimal. If ever you happen to live or hunt under dark skies or usually travel often, anything that has a rating of 6x-9x would give you nice bright views. Those that have 6x- 7x are the most common.
How To Know The Rating?
If you're wondering how to know the rating of your binocular, just look at its body and you'll see numbers written on it. The magnification rating would be the 1st number written down. For instance, you have "6 x 42" and "10 x 50"; those are 6x and 10x respectively.
