With my trusty compact Bushnell Binoculars in my car or pocket I capture many brief and fantastic real life bird scenes. It does not matter where I am. What matters is observing and being alert. As I see a shadow overhead, I may pull over to the side of the road and reach for my binoculars in the glove compartment.
Recently I was in town and not expecting to see any birds besides the usual pigeons, sparrows and a few starlings. To my surprise I came upon a scene that could have come right out of Wild Kingdom.
Right in the library parking lot I witnessed predator and prey in action. I reached for my birding binoculars immediately after I stopped and put the car in park. Yes, it was the middle of the lane, but no one was behind me. The birds were immediately in front of me. I estimated they were about 2 car lengths away. With my birdwatching binoculars I could clearly focus on identifying marks and really enjoyed watching their competitive behavior. It was a life and death struggle and the pigeon (Columba livia) had no chance once the Coopers Hawk had it firmly grasped with its strong feet.
Being out in the open with no cover at all the Coopers Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) kept turning around to watch for its own safety, after each plucked pigeon feather. I could see by the glazed over eyes of the pigeon that it had been killed almost instantly. Thank goodness. Really, I do not like to see animals being eaten alive. The pigeon probably had its neck broken with the first powerful strike after hitting the ground in the hawk's grip.
Each time the Coopers hawk turned I got a different view of its features. It was magnificent. My compact Bushnell binoculars came through again with close up views of the bill and eyes of this beautiful young yet deadly hawk. Deadly that is, if you are a pigeon.
Knowing how similar Coopers Hawks and Sharp-Shinned Hawks can be, I really wanted to get a very complete memory image of this bird. With these super closeup views, I confirmed my identification once I got to my bird guides at home. What a trip to the library that turned out to be!
