Stalk hunting whitetail deer is a very difficult endeavor. Stalking is a hunting method in which the hunter creeps to within shooting range of the deer. Although a trophy whitetail buck is an extremely wary adversary, with enough skill this hunting method can be extremely effective.
Hunting whitetails by stalking requires long sight distance. Open fields and clear cut are best so that deer may be seen over long distances. Binoculars or a spotting scope are used to pick a likely target from some elevated point. Deer are usually spotted either walking or bedded down. Take note of any nearby structures or other landmarks close to the deer to help keep track of the location. Also, check the landscape for the best route to approach the deer from downwind.
Once a deer is spotted and a route is planned, slowly and quietly begin moving closer to the deer. Hunting clothes made of quiet fabric is essential for this method. Keep track of the wind direction to make sure the deer stays upwind in case it changes. Change the stalking route as needed for wind change, cover change or if the deer moves. Stay in cover as much as possible to prevent detection. Always be aware of other deer. One spooked deer will alert the rest. As the distance closes, stalking becomes harder so be sure to take precautions to be as quiet as possible. This may include removing any loud article of clothing or even boots. Never remove any required hunters orange. It is never worth the possibility of being shot.
