Types of Focus.
There are three types of binocular focus: Fixed Focus, Individual Focus, and Center Focus.
- Fixed Focus. These binoculars are permanently pre-focused when created and cannot be adjusted. Generally this type binocular is best for personnel with 20/20 vision or those whose sight has been corrected through eyeglasses or contacts. Fixed focus binoculars are basically ready to use out of the box.
- Individual Focus. Each of the two rear eyepieces is individually focused for the left and right eyes.
- Center Focus. This is the most common type focus. It uses both a center focus wheel and an individual diopter adjustment.
Pre-Focus Adjustment.
Before you focus the binoculars eyepieces you need to set the binoculars to fit correctly to your eyes. Both of your eyes should fit squarely over the rear ocular lenses.
Focusing Center Focus Binoculars.
Focusing is accomplished through the use of the center focus wheel and the diopter adjustment. This wheel is located between the two rear ocular lenses. The diopter adjustment is located on the rear right ocular lens. View some object at a distance from you. This should be something with specific details (such as numbers or letters). Terrain items can be used (such as fence posts, or rocks); however, it is much more difficult to determine the exact details of those type objects.
Close your right eye.
- View the distant object with your left eye.
- Rotate the center focus wheel until you can clearly see the fine details of your object with your left eye.
- Establish the setting on the wheel and leave it.
Now close your left eye.
- View the same distant object with your right eye.
- Do not adjust the center focus wheel.
- Using the diopter adjustment on the right ocular lens rotate it until you can clearly see the fine details of your object with your right eye.
- Now look at the distant object through the binoculars with both eyes open.
- The object should be viewed as a clear, crisp image.
- Both the left and the right eyepieces have been set in focus.
You will use the center focus wheel to adjust for changes in distances. You leave the diopter adjustment alone. Adjusting the wheel will compensate the vision for both eyes.
Focusing Individual Focus Binoculars.
The first difference is that there is no center focus wheel. Each rear ocular eyepiece is individually adjusted to focus on each eye. View some object at a distance from you.
Close your right eye.
- View the distant object with your left eye.
- Using the diopter adjustment on the left ocular lens rotate it until you can clearly see the fine details of your object with your left eye.
Now close your left eye.
- View the same distant object with your right eye.
Closing Comments.
Recall that the binoculars have been set for your eyes. If someone else is going to use the binoculars they will have to set the focus for their eyes (negating your settings). Re-focusing for distance changes is faster with center focus binoculars because both eyes are re-focused simultaneously with the center focus wheel. Whereas, both eyes have to be re-focused with the diopter adjustment on individual focus binoculars.
