How to Select Bird Watching Binoculars
Bird watching is a fun and interesting pastime that is growing in popularity. Not only can you view magnificent birds, but you can also enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and relax in the fresh air. Taking the time to watch birds in flight or in their nesting habits can be a great way to escape the worries of the world for a while and just experience nature.
If you want to get a close view of the birds, you will want to invest in a good pair of binoculars. Binoculars will allow you to see the birds up close even when you are observing them from a distance. You will be able to see their markings and habitat from a distance so you won't frighten them. Good binoculars are something you will need if you want to see the birds in their natural state. But what do you look for in birding binoculars?
One of the most important things, if not the most important thing, is the quality of the lens. No doubt you have heard the saying 'you get what you pay for', well this holds true for anything with an optical lens. You want a lens that has been made well. When you are trying out binoculars in the store, look through them at many different things - even take them outside if the store will permit it. Make sure you can see clearly with no distortions. A quality lens will allow you to see in true color with no blurriness or distortion.
Next you will want to consider the feel. Do they feel comfortable when you hold them up to your eyes? Are you able to easily flex them to the right angle to fit your face perfectly? Weigh them in your hands and think about if they are too heavy to carry around your neck or in a pack. Many people go through many pairs of binoculars before they find one they are comfortable with. Try them out in the store as much as possible so you can eliminate those that don't feel right before you buy!
For birding, you will want a good magnification. The minimum you will want to have is 7x35, although you can go with a larger magnification to see the birds even better. However, the higher you go the more money they will cost.
You will want a fairly large lens. When you are bird watching, you want to be able to see as much as possible. So you want a lens that will let in a lot of light and let you see a wide vista. Keep in mind that the larger the lens and the higher the magnification, the thicker and heavier the glass will be. As a result, the binoculars will be heavier. Look for ones that are made of lighter material so you won't get tired of carrying them.
Bird watching is a great hobby for everyone, and with the right pair of binoculars you will be able to see the detail on the birds like never before!
