Turkey are large, tough birds and special care must be taken to ensure you kill them cleanly and quickly. Selecting a good quality turkey choke is the first step to success but it is only one piece of the puzzle. Numerous manufacturers of shotgun shells offer loads for turkeys and they will all perform differently in your shotgun. Studies have shown that a turkey requires a minimum of 3 pellets penetrating the brain/neck vertebrae for a clean kill. This is why patterning is so critical.
First you will need to gather all of your equipment to pattern your shotgun. This includes the shotgun itself, tight patterning choke(s), hearing and eye protection, life-sized turkey targets showing the vital brain/neck vertebrae shaded, and as many brands of turkey shells as you can reasonably afford. Turkey loads are generally shot size number 4, 5, and 6. Even the same brand will shoot very differently with a different shot size so, again, try to obtain as many as you can.
Place the turkey target out at 25 yards and prepare to shoot the target with the first load. If you can, situate yourself on the ground with your back against a tree to simulate hunting in the field. Shoot the target with the first load, then record on the target the combination of choke and load used. Replace the target and repeat until all loads have been tested. At this time you can move the target out to 30 yards and repeat the steps using only the loads that scored at least 3 critical hits at 25 yards. After that, repeat the steps at 35 and 40 yards which is the maximum recommended distance for taking a turkey.
After following these steps you should have a load that clearly patterns tightest in your gun and will give you the best chance for success this turkey season.
Good luck and good hunting!
