what kind of binoculars are best to observe the night sky?
it is my first attempt, and my teacher said that binoculars are the best for starters. so i was thinking like what power? or like any brands? because i seen them here and there in the shops and when i ask for them they all turn out to be for like watching birds or sports...and it should be from 30 to 40 pounds.thanks!
7x50. The first number is the power. The second is the size of the light gathering lens (objective lens). The circle of light (exit pupil) coming out of the eye lens (ocular lens) will be 7mm in diameter. This is the maximum size your eye can open more or less and will make the brightest image. If you are older this may be smaller. Any combination is OK as long as the size of the objective (in mm) divided by the power is between 5 and 7.
You want light ones or they will get to heavy to hold quickly. Nitrogen Filled is a good feature, but makes them somewhat heavy.
Make sure you get "coated" optics to get every photon of light (the coatings help keep light from "bouncing" off the lenses).
Larger binoculars are heavy, 10x70s are usable if you have some sort of tripod, or even better a parallelogram mount for them. These also have a 7mm exit pupil.
If you want to got crazy you can get larger ones ... Fuji makes some really huge ones like 25x150 but they are very heavy and very very expensive. You could get a nice telescope for 1/4th the price.
One thing to remember about higher power binoculars is that the higher powers show any shaking your hands are doing if you are hand holding them (the 25x150's are over 65lbs and can't be hand held). Getting light binoculars will help this. Good binoculars are only a few lbs.
One thing about binoculars. They are best used from a dark clear site. That is one with no moon, or man made lights and clear skies, that is one where it is possible to see the Milky-way clearly.
I'm not going to recommend any particular brand because with binoculars it is a very personal choice, and what is good for one person may not be the best for someone else.
